Searching for Ropens and Finding God
Nonfiction book about pterosaurs living in Papua New Guinea and around the world
Copyright 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 Jonathan David Whitcomb
Official genre: religion: science & religion, but this nonfiction
“Bible of Modern Pterosaurs” is mostly about ropen sightings
Some people call it “dragon” or “flying dinosaur.” If
you have seen one, then you’ll know it. You’ll know
it’s not a legend and very much non-extinct. You
may have thought it must have been a hallucination
or that you were crazy. But many other people have
also seen a featherless flying creature that was not
like any known bat. Most modern pterosaurs have
long tails. They’re called “ropens.”
The fourth edition of the nonfiction book Searching
for Ropens and Finding God will be available in Nov
of 2014, a cross-genre: spiritually uplifting, true-life
adventure, cryptozoological. It does little to promote
any particular religion, emphasizing how we need to
be tolerant of those who have different religious
views. It promotes faith in the Old Testament of the
Bible and is best appreciated by Christian readers.
Yet the focus is not so much on defending Christian
beliefs as it is on taking you into the lives of those
American explorers who searched for modern living
pterosaurs in Papua New Guinea and elsewhere,
and into the lives of the eyewitnesses who were
shocked or terrified from their encounters with the
flying creatures.
Have you ever seen a "Pterodactyl"
or an apparent living pterosaur?
About the book
“The Bible of Modern Pterosaurs”—that’s what this
book has been called, for its 360 pages are packed
with eyewitness reports of flying creatures unlike
any bat or bird known to Western science.
From the Introduction we read, “Before scientists
created words like ‘Rhamphorhynchoid’ for long
tailed pterosaurs, common folk used the word
‘dragon’ for large destructive creatures, including
those with long tails and wings but no feathers. I
have come to feel no embarrassment from the older
word, when somebody uses it for those long-tailed
pterosaurs commonly thought by many scientists to
have been the ancestors of larger short-tailed
Pterodactyloids like the Pteranodon.”
We also read, “Natives on the remote island of
Umboi use ‘ropen’ for a real creature, large and
nocturnal, that glows for a few seconds at a time
while flying between one mountain and another, or
between land and reef. In English, ‘ropen’ has come
to mean a large long-tailed featherless cryptid, real
or not, that is said to fly over islands in Papua New
Guinea. . . . my associates and I have searched for
them there.”
360 pages - amazing!
